Breaking downI broke down and watered the vegetable garden today. The hoses had not been moved since I put them away late last fall. It seems odd in a really rainy year that I needed to do this, but we've only had about a quarter inch of rain in August, the warm temperatures finally arrived, and I did want to risk losing the tomatoes that are just beginning to ripen. Last year a passing bicyclist broke our plastic sprinkler, and I spent about $30 for a heavy metal sprinkler that maybe would not get damaged. A bonus, I found out today, is that I can irrigate the entire vegetable garden in two sprinkling sessions. This sprinkler sends the water out a long way. I forgot to set out a rain gauge for the first sprinkling, and haven't been back to check it for the first one. But having to move the sprinkler only once to do the entire garden is bound to save some time. Now the debate is going to be whether we will water the flower gardens. Bookmark/Search this post with:

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness. He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren. Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field. |
