Portland gets a new playhouse

Portland's theater scene gets a little more crowded in October.

On Oct. 9, co-artistic directors Michael J. Tobin and Jeffrey Caron will open the Old Port Playhouse, a 70-seat venue that will house a non-Equity professional theater, concerts, special events, classes and an art gallery.

The playhouse is at 19 Temple St.

The inaugural season will include "Sylvia," opening Oct. 9, "Greater Tuna," "Almost, Maine" and "Sex, Love and the I.R.S." Musicals will include "The Wizard of Oz," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Yours, Anne." The new playhouse also plans to present "A Christmas Carol" in December.

Tobin and Caron hope other performers will use their stage, as well. "It's perfect for the solo singer or duo- the acoustics are beautiful. It's a great space for a comedy act or kid's show," Caron said in a statement.

The Old Port Playhouse will open their box office on Thursday. Tickets cost $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and kids.
