Girl Scouts together. That is our song

I was a girl scout in my youth in St. Louis, Mo., while attending Flynn Park Elementary School in University City. I even have the pictures to prove it:

(It's not hard to find me. I'm the one in the middle with the Glow-in-the-Dark hair.)

Pigtails and striped turtlenecks were wicked big time stylish in Girl Scouts.

I didn't make it very far, though. Due to some ... um ... language issues. I seem to remember having a hard time controlling my use of four letter words, words that were not G-O-O-D or G-I-R-L. I think this is the last Girl Scout Troop 35 picture ever taken with me in it.

My poor scouting record thankfully did not follow me into adulthood, because I was invited on Thursday, to join the Girl Scouts of Maine and Time Warner Cable at Grace Restaurant for a luncheon called "Inspired to Lead." Three remarkable women — Angela Adams, Marjorie Dawson and Sandra Monfiletto (none of them are Girls Scouts currently) — spoke about their successes and role models, and offered an audience full of businesswomen some advice on how they, too, can make a difference.

You can read more about the event, and get to know some of the people who attended it, on the Scene and Heard page in the Maine Sunday Telegram's Audience section on Nov. 8.

Now, you'll have to excuse me. I have to get the h--- off this computer.

Giselle Goodman, a 1995 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, moved to Maine in 1997 and started reporting. She hasn't stopped yet. She sings really well. She tells decent jokes and is mildly obsessed with celebrity gossip.

Giselle's most useful talent, however, is the ability to study - then write about - the social behaviors and gatherings of other members of her species. That's what you'll find in "Social Graces" (and its sister column, appearing weekly in the Maine Sunday Telegram).

You can help by inviting Giselle to a party, telling her something she didn't know already (which is lots), or by feeding her a piece of your juicy gossip.

Get in touch! You can reach me at 207-791-6382 or by email. Until then, Cheers!
