The Weekend: Tower of Song, Maine Comic Arts Festival and My Little Pony

This weekend's just bursting with opportunities and if there's even a chance the weather stays nice, people are going to be coming out of their caves in droves.

Be prepared.

FRIDAY

Brenda, Bird in the Rafters, and NYC's Coyote Eyes at Empire Dine and Dance at 9 p.m. It's a $5 entry.
Kate Schrock and Katie Webber at North Star Music Cafe at 8 p.m. $10 all ages
Ogre, Black Pyramid, Prism Camp at Geno's at 9 p.m.

SATURDAY

The Tower of Song festival is coming up in a week. Catch a warm-up fundraiser at the Sylvia Kania Gallery in Portland tonight. The lineup includes Jesse Pilgrim, Johnny Fountain, Gabrielle Raymond (of Anna's Ghost) and Blaque Boose starting at 7 p.m.
Ill by Instinct CD release with Mello, Slouch and Adam B at 9 p.m.
Friend of the blog and DJ to the stars, Graymatter is playing the White Heart tonight starting at 9 p.m. Free as always.

SUNDAY

A few extra special additions to the Weekender:

As I wrote in this week's column, the Acts for Change benefit concert for the Preble Street Resource Center begins at noon at the Asylum. Musicians and comedians on the bill include Adam Kurtz, Jacob Augustine, The Sea Captains and George Hamm. Tickets are $15
And how could I not mention the inaugural Maine Comic Arts Festival beginning at 10 a.m. at Ocean Gateway. Check out the write-up in GO for the lineup of artists and comic creators, including Maine's own Alex Irvine, Lincoln Peirce, and Corey Pandolph. All for $5.

Finally our weekend video takes a look at another unforgotten and rehashed 80s franchise soon coming to a theater near you. My. Little. Pony.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the oundtrack to his life would sound like.
