Honoring a legend

The Maine baseball community will honor legendary
University Maine baseball coach John Winkin this Saturday with a dinner and reception on campus.

winkin2The event is expected to be a who's who in Maine baseball with former Major League Baseball players Bill Swift ('84) and Mike Bordick ('88) among the attendees. Both will be keynote speakers.  

Longtime baseball and hockey announcer Gary Thorne ('70) will be Master of Ceremonies.

Winkin brought six teams to the College World Series in his 21-year coaching career at Maine from 1975-1996. Nine of his players eventually made it to the major leagues. 

Winkin has been rehabilitating since suffering a stroke in December of 2007.

The dinner was organized by baseball alumni.

Jenn covers Maine college sports for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.

A former Portland Pirates beat writer who has covered two winter Olympics for the paper, Jenn will expand her beat this year to include the University of Southern Maine, St. Joseph's College, Bowdoin College, the University of New England, and Southern Maine Community College.

She will continue to cover the University of Maine Black Bears, the state's only division one program.
