Vermont at Maine, pregame

ORONO – The University of Maine men's hockey team will play one game this weekend and one game next weekend - tonight against Vermont and next Sunday (Nov. 8) against Boston University. Vermont (2-2) is coming off an appearance in the Frozen Four, and if you're a college hockey fan, you might remember this notable goal by Vermont defenseman Dan Lawson from last year's NCAA tournament against Air Force - a blast that went through the back of the net and was eventually ruled a goal by the officials.

Needless to say, Maine's going to have to watch Lawson's powerful shot. However, in four games this season, Lawson has yet to score for Vermont, despite taking 11 shots.

Notes: Yes, that's another Stalberg in Vermont's lineup. Viktor Stalberg left after last season to join the Toronto Maple Leafs' organization, but his brother, Sebastian, centers Vermont's third line. Justin Milo - who is probably rooting for the New York Yankees in the World Series, as he played in the Yankees minor-league organization last summer - is out indefinitely with a foot injury. For Maine, freshman Joey Diamond is playing on the top line with Tanner House and Gustav Nyquist, despite not registering a point in Maine's first six games.

Rachel is in her fifth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A former college soccer and softball player, she covered sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

Rachel takes over coverage of the University of Maine hockey team and was introduced to Maine hockey as a seventh-grader in Annapolis, Maryland, after reading a 1988 Sports Illustrated story about Shawn Walsh's impact on the program. Nearly 20 years later, she still has the four-page article in her possession.

She and her husband, Tommy (who also works for Maine Today Media) are avid sports fans who root for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Kansas Jayhawks. After a year of marriage, their next step in life is to find a bigger house!
