UNH 5, Maine 2DURHAM, N.H. - Steve Moses scored two goals as New Hampshire beat Maine 5-2 on Saturday at the Whittemore Center. Tanner House and Will O'Neill scored for Maine (1-5, 0-2 Hockey East), while Greg Manz and Mike Borisenok scored for UNH. Blake Kessel scored an empty-net goal for the Wildcats. Maine goalie Shawn Sirman made 18 saves before being relieved in the third period by Scott Darling. Brian Foster made 22 saves for UNH (2-2-1, 2-0 Hockey East). *** Maine has played both of its goalies - Sirman and Darling - in its past six periods this weekend, but the problem isn't in goal. It's on defense, where the Black Bears gave up 26 shots on goal to the Wildcats, including 22 in the first two periods, and 29 to UMass on Friday in a 5-3 loss. "We're not protecting them," Maine Coach Tim Whitehead said. "That's the difference. It's like being a quarterback ... you just can't rush the passer the whole game. That's kind of what's happening with our goaltending. We're not protecting the front of our net. As a result they're getting a lot of chances and that's really the bottom line. "We have to play with a lot more urgency on defense." *** Freshman forward Adam Shemansky returned to the ice less than 24 hours after he was taken off the ice on a stretcher Friday night at Massachusetts, the result of being hit from behind into the boards. "I got treatment this morning, talked to the coach and I felt confident I could play," Shemansky said. "I felt confident I could make a positive impact for the team today." *** House, a junior forward, scored goals Friday and Saturday night in his first two games. House missed the first four games of the season with a knee injury and up until Thursday afternoon, the coaching staff was uncertain of House's status for the weekend games. "It feels good," said House, who skated Wednesday and Thursday with the Black Bears. "Thursday I felt pretty good and felt like I was ready to go." *** Gustav Nyquist had a pair of assists in the loss, and the sophomore forward has a five-game point-scoring streak. *** Three stars: 1. Steve Moses, UNH 2.Mike Borisenok, UNH 3. Gustav Nyquist, Maine Bookmark/Search this post with:
