Hockey East honors Shemansky; national pollsHockey East named Maine forward Adam Shemansky its co-rookie of the week, joining Merrimack's Brandon Brodhag. Shemansky, a freshman from Robbinsville, N.J., scored two goals Friday in the Black Bears' 4-1 win over No. 15 Vermont and is Maine's second-leading scorer with seven points (five goals, two assists) behind Gustav Nyquist (four goals, seven assists). Nyquist is tied with Massachusetts' James Marcou as Hockey East's top scorer so far this season, while Shemansky is the second-leading freshman scorer in Hockey East, behind Merrimack's Stephane Da Costa (six goals, four assists). Maine (2-5, 1-2 Hockey East) hosts Boston University at 4 p.m. Sunday at Alfond Arena. *** Miami of Ohio continues to be the nation's No. 1 team, both in the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports top 20 poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey top 15 poll. Rachel is in her fifth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A former college soccer and softball player, she covered sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004. Rachel takes over coverage of the University of Maine hockey team and was introduced to Maine hockey as a seventh-grader in Annapolis, Maryland, after reading a 1988 Sports Illustrated story about Shawn Walsh's impact on the program. Nearly 20 years later, she still has the four-page article in her possession. She and her husband, Tommy (who also works for Maine Today Media) are avid sports fans who root for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Kansas Jayhawks.
