Hedrick released; Chris Smith promoted to BrewersPortland Sea Dogs reliever Justin Hedrick was released today which will stop the paper moves to the Lowell roster. The Sea Dogs have been carrying an extra pitcher most of the season, moving various pitchers on the Lowell roster to make room. (Lowell has plenty of room on its roster since it begins its season later this month). Hedrick, who turns 27 next Monday, was signed by the Red Sox this spring after being released by the Giants organization. he has a 1.37 ERA with Connecticut last year, but did not repeat his numbers with Portland. In 17 games, Hedrick's ERA was 6.49. Opponents were batting .317 against him. In other roster news, former Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Smith has been called back to the major leagues by Milwaukee. Smith, 28, signed with Milwaukee after last season when the Red Sox took him off their 40-man roster. He's been a closer in Triple-A, with a 1.38 ERA and 12 saves.
