Dice-K pitches today

Daisuke Matsuzaka makes his first Red Sox start this spring, after his stellar performance in the WBC. It will be interesting to note how many pitches Boston allows him to throw (and how many innings he can last). A Dice-K who pounds the strike zone would be a lot more efficient than the nibbling Dice-K. The Red Sox have made some roster moves and decisions, as the roster takes shape. Two former Sea Dogs, catcher Dusty Brown and pitcher Devern Hansack, were sent down to Pawtucket. Both moves were expected. Brown, entering his second year on Boston's 40-man roster, has yet to play in a major league game. Hansack has not fared well in the majors since his debut in 2006 (after pitching the Sea Dogs to the Eastern League championship). Hansack is likely out of options after this year. This is his last season to make an impression - if he gets another chance. The Red Sox also officially moved Justin Masterson to the bullpen. That leaves Brad Penny as the No. 5 starter, unless Boston thinks he and his shoulder need more time. Then Clay Buchholz will get to hold off his assignment to Pawtucket. With Brad Wilkerson leaving camp, the competition for one of the Red Sox back-up jobs comes down to Chris Carter and Jeff Bailey. As already stated, Carter looks to have the job (until Mark Kotday is healthy). Outfielder Jon Van Every has a sprained ankle. He will likely start the season on the DL, which likely opens up a spot in Pawtucket.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
